Welcome to kalwood web works

We're a small web development studio based in Victoria, BC Canada. Our speciality is helping small local businesses and non-profits have a monitored web presence when they need a web department ... just not a dedicated full time staff person.

Our philosophy is to make the site fit the client, not the client fit the site. By taking the time to get to know you and your organization, the site can really represent who you are.

Our specialities include content management systems, forums, client side server administration and on-going maintenance of websites. Coding abilities are highlighted by php, CSS and html.

This site is part client info, part blog, and part test bed. Welcome!

current projects

Current Projects

Most of our recent work has been in association with m2media (great guys!). They make it look good, and kalwood web works codes various elements of their projects.

LA Tanning www.latanning.ca

Challenge: new site by kalwood. Owners wanted the ability to change sections by themselves, all while having a clean, updated look. Facebook integration paramount.

Solution: custom theme on a joomla! site.

IROCC www.irocc.ca

Challenge: revamped site by kalwood. Owners wanted the ability to change sections by themselves, all while having a clean, updated look. Forum integration paramount. Previous version had many pictures incorporated, this version removed them.

Solution: custom theme on a joomla! site with a simple machines forum to match.

Hoel Engineering
hoel.bc.ca

Challenge: original site is coming up to ten years old, and client is looking at maintaining site for the short term, until new site can be finalized. Trick is to have the updated client requirements mesh with the existing older code.

Solution: streamline a minimal amount of the original code to work with modern techniques. Updated working pages with a common code base so changes could be applied uniformly.

RC Tagz
rctagz.com

Challenge: new site, designed by m2media. Integrated customized email forms per product page into existing code.

Solution: guillotined provided images into web friendly chunks. Hand coded email forms to fit image chunks.

Cognitive Leadership Strategies West
clswest.com

Challenge: completely redesigned site. Client hired m2media to design, and kalwood web works to code. Image mapping used, but clicked image outlines were not to be seen.

Solution: new site coding. Image mapping is old school, but it fit this project to a "T". Stopping image outlining was easy, the IE fix was not.

Scrap your car scrapyourcar.ca

Challenge: completely redesigned site. Client hired m2media to design, and kalwood web works to code. Especially important criteria was to make the site as "google friendly" as possible.

Solution: new site coding. Guillotined given images to provide as many SEO tags as possible. Plain text given where possible. Used php code to streamline the future maintenance process.

Victoria Landscaping www.victorialandscapingltd.com

Challenge: another m2media site. Email form presented problems. Also, IE was again causing havoc with the positioning of images as the designers wanted.

Solution: typical php email form given over to old school mailto: tag. IE tamed with old school hacks as well.

Metis Community Services www.metis.ca

Challenge: a redesign for some wonderful people that requested an easy to update site. Wanted a way for the public to contact for more information.

Solution: Joomla! CMS. Tried several ways of getting public involved in dialogue. Went back to the gold standard "contact us" form. Site design circa 2008.

archived projects

Archived Projects

Some of our earlier work, presented here for perspective.

LEADS Learning
leadslearning.com

Challenge: new site construction. In association with m2media. First foray into a "fixed cap" (top and bottom of page static, centre area stretches to fit given content) website. IE presented its usual assortment of issues.

Solution: divs to make the top, middle and bottom elements align.

NB: site is still live ... archived because the original concept worked on has merged with a wordpress site.

ORCA Society

Challenge: first site construction "for money" by kalwood web works. Presented html data, as well as a members only area. Circa 2005.

Solution: Joomla! CMS and Simple Machines Forums. Used server side includes (SSI) to pull up coming events from online calendar.

NB: site is long gone. Unfortunately, the archived database isn't playing nice with the archived files, hence the apparent lack of content.

More to come!

Graphics

Some earlier work, presented here for perspective. No site link means the project is historical.

SM CYCLE

Challenge: The then current SM Cycle site had a functioning shopping cart site in place. The splash pages, presented in part here, were a monthly way of freshening the site for repeat visitors. The last 4 images are showing an evolution of the idea, with a static outer shell, and a smaller changeable centerpiece image.

IROCC

Challenge: The then current IROCC site had an archaic CMS in place. These example splash pages were put up to breath some freshness into the site, before a complete overhaul of the site took place.

Random samples

Notes: These two stick as being favourites. The metis header isn't original, but the time spent to make the beadwork seem like it belonged to that image was educational. The motorcycle skeleton just looks cool, n'est pas?
